The Parish Church of St. Peter
St. Peter’s Parish Church is the parish church of Beeding in West Sussex. Today the village is normally called “Upper Beeding”, but the church sticks to the more ancient title. There is a village of “Lower Beeding”, which was founded by the monks from St. Peter’s - hence the modern practice of calling (original) beeding, “Upper Beeding”.
St. Peter’s is also known as “Sele Priory”, which was its name when Benedictine monks lived here.
There was a Saxon Church (small parts of which survive), but the building was largely reconstructed by the Normans, and again in 1307/1308. The Chapel of Our Lady (Mary) was added in Victorian times.
The church is now kept locked outside service times for reasons of security, but visits can be arranged by emailing us - see the Contact page for details.
However, the church will be open for visits every Wednesday morning during the summer of 2008.
