St Nicholas’ Church - Bramber

Bramber: The Parish Church of St Nicholas

St Nicholas’ Parish Church is the parish church of Bramber - said to be one of the prettiest villages in West Sussex. It is also the last remaining part of Bramber Castle still in regular use. Bramber Castle is a National Trust site, but is operated by English Heritage.

Built in 1073 by William de Braose, the castle is largely in ruins, but the church continues in daily use. Tourists still come to the site in large numbers. Souvenirs are on sale.

The church is open most days, during the daytime. It is the oldest Norman church in Sussex, and one of only three in the country to boast original Norman capital carvings (11th century) on the chancel arch pillars. The chancel arch itself is a stunning piece of architecture in this glorious little church, greatly loved by so many people.

Visitors are always welcome. Groups are asked to make advance contact. Refreshments can be provided, but only by prior arrangement.
