Botolphs The Parish Church of St Botolph
St Botolph’s Parish Church is the parish church of Botolphs village - one of the smallest villages in West Sussex and in the country. Even with the nearby hamlet of Annington (also served by this church) the total adult population is fewer than 50 people.
The church is over 1000 years old - the nave was built in 950, although the present tower and chancel were added around 1250.
The church is on the South Downs Way, and is sometimes called “The Walkers’ Church”. Many tourists visit because of the antiquity of the church.
It has also gained a recognised place as a ‘specialist church’ for the provision of the traditional farming festivals and their ancient liturgies, including Harvest Festival, Lammas Festival, Rogationtide with Procession, and Plough Sunday.
St.Botolph’s is open most days, during daylight hours. Visitors are always welcome here, and souvenirs are available.
